Empress Maria Theresia (1717 –1780) was a monarch who followed the principles of enlightened absolutism. In 1740, after the death of her father Karl VI, Maria Theresia actively took over the government of the Habsburg countries. She reformed the administration and military, introduced compulsory education, abolished torture and improved the situation of the farmers. Maria Theresia was the mother of 16 children. She laid the foundation stone for a modern infrastructure and administration. Maria Theresia has an elaborate sarcophagus in the Imperial Crypt
